SeminarsThis week 5th grade seminars began. Seminars will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:30 to 10:20. If your child is in band, one seminar will cover this area. Seminars are based on students' needs. For example, if I see that your child will need to be challenged in the area of math, they may have a seminar that is focused on high-level mathematical problem solving. If I see that your child may need some extra support with reading or writing, there are seminars that focus on these areas as well. Seminars will run for six weeks. During the second trimester, the students' needs will be assessed, and the 5th grade team will create new seminars to support all students. The students truly enjoy this program, and the teachers find it beneficial to meet all students' needs. Mid-Trimester ReportsDid I just say "Mid-Trimester" progress reports? Yes, we are halfway through the trimester now, and I have been doing various formal and informal observations in class. Tonight, your child will receive a mid-trimester progress report for AR. This is to show you where the students stand with their goals that they set at the beginning of the trimester with me. If your child does not have at least 50% of his/her goal complete, it's time to start reading! Also, some of you may receive a mid-trimester report about your child's progress in the area of math, science, writing, or reading. Please do not be alarmed. This report is to give you a "heads-up" on how your child may be doing in a particular subject area. If your child is not progressing in an area, you will receive a progress report and a plan will be written on the report about how to bring your child's progress up to speed in that area. We will be talking more about this at your child's conference in November. If you haven't signed up for a conference yet, please do so on our website under the "Parent" tab, and click on the up link. Language ArtsAs a class. we are continuing to read the book Wringer by Jerry Spinelli. Each chapter brings a vivid picture to our eyes as we read the most unforgettable moments in Palmer LaRue's path toward turning 10. This leads to our first major writing project, a personal narrative. During the month of October, students will pick an unforgettable event that has happened in their lives, and write about it. Students will be learning how to write a good lead, use dialogue, vivid verbs, and "show not tell" in their essay. I will take the students through the writing process, and they will each complete at least two drafts of their story before the final copy is published. | MathWe are well into the second month of school, and that means it's time for our first unit test. The test will be on Friday October 5. We have finished up division with double digit divisors this week, and we will continue to review order of operations, prime factorization, algebraic expressions and equations, function tables, expanded form (with and without exponents), multiplication of 2 and 3 digit numbers, and division with 2 digit divisors. Students can review these concepts through homework, IXL, and Study Island. During the month of October, we will move on to Unit 2, which involves decimal theory with addition and subtraction. ScienceStudents will continue conducting experiments with plants this month. Students also have an opportunity to do extra credit assignments at home. I encourage them to do extra research at home or even conduct an experiment that they can bring in and share with the class! It's exciting to see their enthusiasm for science! Social StudiesThe students just finished studying various Native American groups. We are now moving along the history timeline into the world of exploration! Students will be learning about various explorers and the effect they had on our world. They will also create a presentation about a specific explorer and his travels to present to the class. |
