Outdoor Ed
We are leaving for Outdoor Ed in less than two weeks, and the students are getting very excited about our trip! Here are a few reminders for parents:
•On the day of departure, Tuesday January 21, all students and parents must walk luggage up the hill and deposit it in the Multipurpose Room under the “Devoto” sign. Our driveway cannot accommodate all of those cars.
•Please try to tie sleeping bags and luggage together in one bundle.
•Label all luggage.
•Any parent who has volunteered to drive luggage & students to Outdoor Ed should plan to arrive in the driveway at 9:30. Students will be called to the cars.
•School begins at the regular time on Tuesday January 21. We will have classroom time before we depart for Outdoor Ed.
•We return to Bel Aire on Friday January 25 at 1:00. Parents should walk up the hill, meet children in the MPR and sign out with the teacher.
•Any adult picking up a child must be the parent or someone listed on the child’s Emergency Card. If you plan to have someone else pick up your child, please let us know in advance.
Math
This month students will wrap up the study of multiplying & dividing fractions & decimals before Outdoor Ed. After our return they will begin studying 2-dimensional figures. They will practice classifying and identifying quadrilaterals, triangles, and polygons. They will classify angles and lines as well as learn about the sums of the angles in triangles & quadrilaterals. This type of math accesses a different area of the brain than the numerical calculations that they have been working with recently. I often observe that students who have a facility with numbers, struggle a bit more with geometry and vice versa. The students will have plenty of opportunities to work with hands on drawings of shapes and angles.
Language Arts
Students are scheduled to begin their second round of literature circles this month. Our first meeting is scheduled for Friday, February 1. Students will have chapters to read and respond to by the following week. We will meet every Friday until March 1. (We will not meet during mid-winter break.)
Everyone will write a response to his/her chapters each week on our educational social networking site called Edmodo. This way, you will be able to read the children’s responses to the literature they are reading each week. Students may blog at school or at home, but it must be completed by Friday’s meeting time. Complete sentences, capitalization, correct spelling, and grammar will be used when students are blogging about the books. This is part of their literature circle grade for this trimester.
Social Studies
This month the class will begin to learn about life in the early colonies. Students will be learning about the settling of the 13 colonies, colonial trades, and important people who were involved in the establishment of the colonies.
Students now have the opportunity to take online quizzes through the Scott Foresman website. Students can also access their book online at home. Students can access the site from the “Quick Links” on the left side of the Bel Aire homepage. Students use their personal usernames and passwords to access the site.
Science
This month the class is studying atoms, molecules, and chemical reactions.
