Award-winning film director Ted Chung spent about 20 minutes with us Thursday afternoon answering students’ questions about his film A Thousand Words. I use the short film to spark discussions about the subtlety of storytelling. Students voted on seven questions that they wanted to ask him, and they were very professional during the interview. I hope you are proud of your amazing children!
This morning we were fortunate enough to witness the space shuttle fly directly overhead! Ask your child about it! I wish I had my phone out 30 seconds earlier. The photo below would have been much more dramatic. Can you spot the black blob that is the shuttle?
Congratulations to Niharika and Lucy who represented our class in Bel Aire's Spelling Bee this week! They both did great and we are proud of them!
Students busted out their creative side to artfully design miniature selves showing four bodily systems: circulatory, digestion, respiratory, and excretory. Isn’t science fun!
On Monday I will send a comprehensive email explaining the Accelerated Reader program and share with you documents that will help you access your child’s online profile from home.
Staff Development Day - No kids
From 9:00-10:15 three parent volunteers (Danielle Racich, Margaret De Somma, Michele Sine - thank you!) will come in to support hands-on small group activities. Math centers occur the last Thursday of each month.
From 11:30-12:15 five parent volunteers (Alexa Robinson, Rose Costa, Carolyn Cohan, Christine Svanfeldt, Courtney Finnegan - thank you all!) will lead small groups in literature discussion. The purpose is to help students engage with literature at a deeper level. Students are taught methods for analyzing text, summarizing what they read, identifying and responding to meaningful passages, connecting the story to their lives, and asking open-ended questions that prompt rich discussions.
This Friday students begin seminars! Seminars are small group, differentiated courses designed to meet their individual needs. There are two seminar tracks (Tuesdays 9:30-10:20 and Fridays 9:30-10:20) that each last for six weeks.
Have a great weekend!
