Update: Tri #1 3rd Grade Specialist Block
Since August, during the specialist block, we have been integrating music, PE, Spanish and technology with the “Community” theme and “Gratitude.” We have focused on each letter in MOSAIC and are working through the Scholarly Attributes. To build community, we begin as a whole group, where we do a “Heart Shift.” (Ask your child what this is.) Then we sing songs accompanied by the piano with Mr. Gist, and lead a “Community” lesson. Another large focus this year has been on teaching 3rd graders about Zero Waste and Water Conservation.
All classes experience a myriad of specialist teachers within multiple subject areas, using the blended teaching approach. For example, one may witness Mr. Jacobson leading the students through a Spanish lesson, engaging in movement activities to increase student learning and achievement. Students will not experience a traditional “PE teacher” teaching a traditional “PE class.” Again, an integrated and blended teaching model is in place during this block.
This trimester, Ms. Malone and Mr. Gist partnered to teach students about “Gratitude” in our “Community” through music in Spanish. Students have been working with musical instruments such as the xylophones, shakers, drums and sticks.
Mr. Rossi and new to Bel Aire, Mr. Woodard, have been engaging students by playing skill-based games to develop necessary abilities for game playing development (i.e. throwing, passing, dribbling, catching). They have also been instilling cooperation and collaboration through team building activities in support of our “Community” theme. Mr. Rossi has brought in his passion for water conservation to his lessons this trimester as well.
Ms. Morphy and Mr. Jacobson partnered to teach movement activities about “Gratitude” and our “Community” in Spanish. Ms. Morphy also partnered with Mr. Gist to teach about communities around the world through music, Spanish, and games. Ms. Morphy also led a language arts lesson around “MOSAIC” statements where students verbalized kind words and positive thoughts about each other in both Spanish and English.
In addition, this trimester, Mr. Jacobson led PE lessons about our “Community” in Tiburon by teaching about landmarks. Students traveled through stations and used actions to reenact daily historical life in Tiburon. Tagging onto his PE lesson, Ms. Malone taught about Tiburon geography in Spanish on a giant map that students did movements on. Mrs. Rhodes and Mr. Jacobson partnered to use the iPad app called “Coach’s Eye” which records students’ movements and allows them to self assess and improve their form and technique.
Mrs. Rhodes, Ms. Skinner and Mrs. Ancelovici worked together to familiarize students with the Bel Aire Library. They taught library skills such as alphabetization, the Dewey Decimal System, and showed students how to use the “Researcher” and “Scout” apps on the iPad. Most recently, these teachers have been teaching about “Gratitude” through creating “Thankful Grams” with students. These postcards will be delivered amongst the Bel Aire students, teachers and staff.
Ms. Skinner and Ms. Malone partnered to host a community art lesson, which talked about the importance of art in our community. The art lesson featured Jackson Pollack-inspired work, where students used mediums such as glue, salt and watercolors.
